How Does Solar Energy Work? A Step by Step Guide

  • Aug 3rd 2018

Ever wondered how solar energy actually works? How do solar panels make electricity and where does the solar energy come from? Below we will list all the steps of this process. Going from sunlight to electricity in your outlet.

Solar Energy Step by Step

1. Photons in sunlight hit the solar panel and are absorbed by semiconducting materials, such as silicon.

2. Electrons are knocked off from the atoms, they get excited

3. The knocked out electrons travels through the solar cell until it reach an elctrode. This will cause current flows through the material to cancel the potential and this electricity is captured

4. An inverter can then convert this direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC)

5. The AC current can then be consumed by appliances or sent to the grid.
